Tufting
What is tufting and how does it work?
Tufting is a textile technique in which threads are woven into a tightly stretched base fabric to create dense, fluffy structures. The term comes from the English word "to tuft," which means "to bunch up" or "to arrange in tufts."
Tufting is done mechanically using a special needle gun: The needle pierces the stretched backing fabric, inserting the thread. Directly behind the needle, integrated scissors cut the thread, creating small tufts. This creates fluffy surfaces that are used, for example, in carpets or upholstery.

Workshop schedule
Location
You can find out where the tufting workshop will take place when booking the respective appointment. Since studio knot hasn't yet found suitable premises of its own, the workshops will take place at various locations, all of which are located in the heart of Stuttgart.
Preparation
Basically, you don't need any prior experience! You don't need to know anything about sewing or textiles or fiber science. It's perfectly sufficient if you come to the craft with motivation and creativity.
We provide the materials, tufting frame, machine, backing fabric, and yarn. So you don't need to bring anything with you; however, you should consider your clothing choices. For safety reasons, a few rules apply when working:
You should not wear scarves, long necklaces or other loose accessories
Long hair must also be tied up on site, otherwise it could get caught in moving machine parts.
Additionally, when the carpets are shaved at the end of the course, fine lint will be released into the air. We will provide you with a respirator mask. However, some participants react more strongly to this than others, and similar to a visit to the hairdresser, the residue can cause scratching or itching on clothing. So, if you have any plans afterward, bring a change of clothes.
Before the workshop, you can decide which motif you want to use. You can either draw your own design or find a (non-copyrighted) template online. If you're unsure about your motif, please read the detailed instructions on what's possible and what's not for beginners, so that your workshop is a success for you too.
You should send us the selected motif by email at least 7 days before the workshop so that we can check its feasibility.
completion
The goal of the course is to complete your own tufting project. However, since all participants come with different levels of experience and skill, it may happen that someone doesn't finish completely. In this case, we will take care of the completion, and the finished product can be picked up shortly after consultation or sent to you for an additional fee.
Age restriction
Participation is restricted to a minimum age of 16. Parents and guardians must fulfill their duty of supervision before and after the workshop. You can read more about this in our Terms and Conditions .
